When you're looking for decorating ideas, make sure you take the theme of the room into consideration.
This doesn’t mean that you should match a polka dot painting with a striped wall, but it means that you should look for art that matches the mood, the atmosphere and the color scheme that you are looking for in your finished product.
If you aren't sure you have a theme, ask a professional that works in the business to help you out, visit sites like this one or HGTV.com to help you figure out a common thread that peaks to your interest.
There's one out there somewhere! You just have to go find it at times.

Make Sure You Like It
When you have your theme all sorted out and you begin to look at abstract art or contemporary artwork, make sure that you pick something you actually like.
No seriously, this is not a duhh moment!
There are a lot of people out there who choose art that perfectly matches their theme and wall space, only to tell someone in a moment of weakness that they don't actually like the painting at all.
Remember that interior design is about expressing yourself through the art, so you have to make sure that you like it in the first place, right?
Don't go for something simply because it looks right, or it's popular. Go for it simply because you love it and it matches what you already have in place.

Think Outside Of The Box
Similar to the note above, you can go outside of the options that other people are choosing for their homes.
Just because it's popular doesn't mean that you should get it.
If you like it, go for it.
So, think about your room. If you are looking for interior design ideas that will really help you make a splash when you have people over, go for options that are a little "out there".
Maybe not the polka dots with stripes, but don't be afraid to try something a little different in terms of print, color, or pattern. You can have a lot of fun with it and your home will look great by the end of your art roller coaster journey.
The point is to have fun.

Go Big Or Go Home
Don't come home with a tiny piece that you realize after you put it up, is too small.
If you have a big wall space, make sure you get the right painting to match it. There is a lot of art for sale out there, including excellent online vendors, so you'll find the right piece for your room, and the right size.
If you get something that is too small, it'll leave you feeling like something is missing, and you'll really find yourself not appreciating that space, even if you can't put your finger on the exact reason why.
So, make sure you do the math right and pick the right size for your home. Some measuring and painters tape is all you need to make sure that picture will work for your space.
On the other hand if one big bold image just freaks you out, as it does for some, try using smaller multi panel artwork to help fill in the space on your walls.

Choose The Right Space
Last but not least, pick the right space for your painting.
This means that you need to choose which wall is your accent wall. This could be the space that already has some artwork on it, or it could be a totally different space that you feel your painting would be best suited on.
The point is, putting your gorgeous painting in the wrong place could be as damaging as putting the wrong painting up, so make sure you take the space alignment seriously as well as the alignment and position on the wall, too.
All of this makes a difference when you're creating a finished put together look, so don't underestimate its power!
